I suppose, the Elves at Helms Deep was a bit of a mistake, as it made the Rohirrim look really weak, and in the book, there were several thousand of them at least as I recall. The worst one that you have not mentioned, (for me anyway), was Arwen pinching the role of Glorfindel, I really wanted to see him in the film, I was totally gutted when he was never seen or even mentioned.

I voted for Haldir's death. But truthfully, the WORST misake was The Shire not being scoured. And I think Diamond's idea was worse still. I wanted to see Glofindel so much. And some of the choice are irrelevant. Like Saruman will die, but in the next movie. The next movie is supposed to start with the ruins of Isengard. And I know how Saruman dies! Hahahahaaaa, I won't tell any of you, but just this, PETER JACKSON improved on the way he died in the book. grin That isn't something you expect to hear.... EVER! tongue

But I think Elves at Helm's Deep wasn't a mistake, though it did do what Diamond said it did. I think Jackson wanted to make Rohan and Gondor look paper thin, and "ready to fall". As Saruman says in the movie.

TEXTLeaving out Tom Bombadil is a minor mistake because, in fact, he could easily have been left out of the novel. I've read elsewhere that Tolkien admitted that Tom Bombadil didn't really fit in as he was a completely different character. He's neither Man, nor Hobbit, not Wizard, nor Elf, nor Dwarf. And of course, he was not an Orc. The Harvard boys who write for Sparknotes say that the One Ring had no effect on either Tom Bombadil or Samwise Gamgee. It seemed to me that the movie's depiction of "Sam's Temptation" (to keep the Ring) was out of place. The movie fails to explain how the Hobbits got their weapons, because in the novel, they get them while with Tom.
But in the end, we deserved to see Saruman AND GRIMA meet their ends. So that's the biggest mistake, IMHO.
Also, I was concerned with the dwarfist/racist humor. Did Tolkien poke fun at the Dwarves? I'm refering to the 'short' jokes, particularly in The Two Towers. I read the novel in '77, so my memory is not clear on all the issues.
